BTF Kalyani
support center for the school going children
Project Started on : 30/11/2008
Operated by
Towards Future aims to provide basic education and health to underprivileged children. BTF Kalyani, which is a Project of Towards Future, started on 30th Nov 2008, is a support study centre for children coming from economically backward backgrounds. The students go to different schools. Here at BTF Kalyani, we provide support to the children who are weak in studies. We begin with primary education as it is the first stage of compulsory learning.
Instigation of the project: In the beginning we found that the children from the nearby areas are not interested in studies and they don’t feel any drive towards going to school. Moreover, they are first generation learners and hence they do not get any guidance from their home environment regarding education. These factors instigated the idea of a support study project such as ours to help them to learn.
Statistics: Our survey indicates that although their names are enrolled in the school register, their attendance is very poor. One such instance in a certain school was that 103 students were enrolled in a single section whereas the average attendance was only 55-60.

Objectives
- To provide basic literacy to children from economically weaker sections, majority of them being first generation learners
- To inculcate their interest in learning not for the sake of passing school, but for their overall development as a respectable citizen
- To involve practical applications and interactive ways of studying so they understand concepts and fall in love with learning
- Discovering their hidden talents by providing extracurricular activities (eg. We encourage a student with an aptitude for art to pursue art as a career prospect in future)
- Provide professional guidance whilst they pursue higher studies
- Create basic awareness in the community (students and their families) about the importance of the right kind of education
- Create awareness about the importance of their health and hygiene (eg. Issues related to malnutrition)
Methodologies
- It has been revealed from various surveys and experiences that the teaching quality in a lot of govt. and govt. aided schools is so poor that a large number of children drop out before completing 8th standard
- In BTF Kalyani, we provide basic literacy and also establish foundation in mathematics, sciences, social sciences and humanities subjects
- We use charts, maps, globes, atlases and other interactive teaching tools. Our volunteers try out various practical experiments to pique interests. Apart from their textbook lessons, we also provide extracurricular activities like crafts, drawing, music, dance, martial arts etc to explore their hidden talents. We are trying to make education interactive and rewarding
- We also provide compulsory health check-up twice a year and distribute medicines as per the doctor’s prescription. We noticed that the general health of the children has improved greatly

Evaluations
- We started out with 8 students and in 2020 we have 33, since we strive to achieve quality over quantity, we do not enroll more than this number so we can equally attend to every student. Although we cannot admit every interested student, our project is gaining increasing popularity in the local communities of the students
- We usually admit students who have no prior experience with education so we can start from the grass root level. It has been observed that each and every student in 2019 has performed tremendously well in their respective schools, 13 out of 33 ranking within top 10 in their classes. In 2019 in their respective schools 5 students ranked within top 3, and 13 studetns ranked within top 10. We are so proud
- Special mention: One of our students, Puja Malo in her class 4 Annual examination, stood first among all the 17 schools under Sarva Shiksha Mission under Kalyani Municipality
- In our journey of 11 years, 10 of our students have appeared for and passed Madhyamik (class X board exam). Three of them secured 1st division
- One of our students passed Higher Secondary (class XII board exam) in 2019 securing 82% marks
- Two of our students passed Madhyamik (class 10 board exam) in 2020 securing 78% and 62% respectively
